The story
This is the older shape, the red-bitter aperitivo that was around before anyone thought to add gin: Campari, sweet vermouth, soda, length. The common Negroni story even runs through here, gin arriving where the soda was. On its own it drinks easy before food or in the heat, when a full Negroni would be too much. Go heavy on the soda and it thins out, so the vermouth needs enough body to hold up underneath.
