Reposado tequila
Ingredient type · Agave spirit
What it does
Reposado tequila lives in Rosita territory, where it's more than a straight tequila-for-gin swap. It brings agave weight and a little barrel warmth while Campari, split vermouth, and bitters do the structural work around it. Take that structure away and the drink turns loose. The point here is agave in a bitter, stirred shape, and the smoke is a mezcal thing, not this.
In the family
Mezcal/tequila
Agave takes the base away from gin. Mezcal brings smoke and earth; reposado tequila brings agave weight without the smoke. Either way, the drink needs enough bitter and vermouth structure around it.
